Bijiashan Transformer Plant
Type: Competition Submission, September 2024
Location: Shenzhen China

Collaborator: Ninghui, Xuejun Hu

The redesign of the transformer plant in Shenzhen transforms industrial infrastructure into a dynamic, community-centered hub. Located next to the verdant Bijiashan Park and surrounded by residential buildings, the project integrates public programming to activate the site 24/7, while preserving its utility function in a half-sunken indoor facility.

The façade design, featuring a harmonious blend of glulam, steel, and glass, provides a visually striking yet context-sensitive architectural expression. Glulam brings a natural warmth that resonates with the greenery of the adjacent park, while steel lends structural precision and durability. Expansive glass panels offer transparency, symbolizing openness and connection, while allowing natural light to permeate the interior spaces.

The design introduces diverse amenities: a public plaza and café for social interaction, a rooftop racquet sports area for active recreation, an electricity museum for educational engagement, and a co-working space to support creativity and innovation. A seamless path connecting the site to Bijiashan Hill further enhances accessibility and fosters a stronger relationship with the surrounding natural landscape.

This project transforms the transformer plant into a vibrant urban landmark, seamlessly blending its industrial function with public life and sustainable design.
